Thanks for sharing that article Andrea. The major points apply to mathematics as well. Our math department is currently involved in a great deal of discussion about the nature of the courses we teach with respect to the needs of our audience. 61% of the students we serve are enrolled in the basic 100 level courses. Most of these students are majors from other disciplines and we are thinking very hard about how we might revise our courses to better meet their needs. Developing the ability to solve problems, apply knowledge to real world situations, interpret and make sense of information as compared to developing competencies in calculation and symbol manipulation are central to our discussions.
