This year In my sophomore biology section, I have decided on a cellular, genetic focus. Initially as we defined "living things" and cell theory, I had little difficulty incorporating inquiry based projects as well as a few creative ones. Also, I have a lot of ideas for when we delve into Mendelian genetics, the human genome project and genetic engineering. But now as we define chromosomes, learn mitosis and meiosis and discuss the "central dogma" of DNA–>RNA-> protein, things are pretty dry. There is a lot of vocabulary and the concepts seem abstract. My honors students stick with me, but I loose my basic kids. I do have some plastic models where they will build a double helix and model transcription and translation. But that is all. I am looking for some ideas to infuse a little more inquiry, a little more spirit, a little more creativity into this part of the unit.
