As I have taught Math 314 through the years, my students keep telling
me that they study hard yet their test
results don't show it. After much thought and conversations with
students during office hours, I finally feel like I
have meaningful feedback to give you. So, I thought I would give
you some suggestions
how to get study for this class:
1. Go through the sections that we have covered so
far and make a list of all definitions given. Memorize those
definitions. After you write down each definition, give one example
where the definition is satisfied and another one where the definition
is not satisfied.
2. Go through the sections that we have covered so
far and make a list of all results (Lemmas, Theorems and Corollaries)
given. Write down also the proofs. Make sure you understand
them and memorize the results and proofs.
3. Make a list of all “strategies” suggested by the
book. Memorize those strategies. Compare the strategies listed
with those used in the proofs of results in the book.
4. Go through all homework assigned and make sure you
know how to solve those problems. Are the strategies you listed helpful
to solve the homework problems?
I hope these suggestions will help!
To help you get disciplined, I encourage you to keep a notebook updated
with the information from suggestions 1-3. Who knows? Maybe
having your notebook up-to-date could be a source of extra-credit (if
it becomes necessary!)
